Yes, custom fields can be updated through matter upload. To update a custom field, first download the columns info from the matter upload tab. Then determine which field matches the column info for custom field through Settings -> All Matter Fields & Help Files -> clicking on the name of your custom field. You will see the original field name for your custom field, which you can match with the matter upload column name in the columns info file.
